Day 8

Monday. Just five days before the performance.

“Okay, let’s try this on,” Beverly said over lunch.

While she fastened the long gray nurse’s uniform around me, and added the long white apron in front, Ms. Green came out of her office eating half a tuna fish sandwich.

“Looks great, Bev,” she said.

Beverly stood back a moment to assess her work. “Yeah, not bad for piecing it together out of three different pairs of men’s pants.”

Ms. Green tugged on one of the fasteners at my shoulder. “You sure that’s loose enough?”

“That’s what we’re about to find out,” Beverly said. “But first let’s do the cap, too.”

She gathered my hair up into a loose bun and stuck a nurse’s cap on top. Then she held the whole contraption together with one long hair pin.

“Okay, when I count to three,” Beverly told me, “you’re going to reach up and take that pin out, throw off the cap, and shake out your hair. I’ll handle the clothes.”

Ms. Green stepped back to give us a little more room.

Beverly gathered up two fistfuls of material in the front. “Okay, one, two, three!”

As I whipped off the nurse’s cap, Beverly ripped off the apron and uniform in one swift pull. I was back to my regular clothes.

Beverly laughed with delight. “I love it when that works! Awesome, awesome.”

Ms. Green and I both clapped.

“So what’s Madison wearing underneath?” Ms. Green asked.

Beverly groaned. “The new flashback dress. The one that I’ve now had to redo three times because the maestro wants it in white . . . no, in blue . . . no, not that blue . . .” Beverly made a motion like she was wringing someone’s neck.

“So sorry teachers aren’t allowed to participate,” Ms. Green said with a wicked grin, and disappeared back into her office.

Beverly sank down onto the couch. “I don’t know, Rie—I don’t see how I’m going to get it all done.”

I flopped down beside her. “You will. You’re really, really good.”

“Yeah, but we only have four more days.”

“Four?” I said. “I thought we had five.”

“No, dress rehearsal’s on Friday night. So while everyone else has twenty-four extra hours to get it all together, I have to be ready Friday.”

“I’ll help you as much as I can.”

Beverly patted my leg. “Thank you. But I know you have your own prep to do.”

“The dogs and I’ll be fine.”

“I have no doubt of that.”

Beverly pushed up from the couch. “But . . . those costumes aren’t just going to make themselves, are they? Better get crackin.”

And just then the bell rang for class. Of course.

Danny called us over on our way out of the theater. “How’s it coming?”

Beverly shrugged wearily.

“Don’t give me that, champ.”

“I’m tired, Chief.”

“We’re all tired,” Danny said.

“Not you, Psycho Grecko. Look at you—as wired as ever. The more desperate everything gets, the more you love it.”

“It’s true, I do feed off the pain of others,” Danny said. “How about you, Doggirl? Feeling confident?”

“I think so.”

“Dogs going to be ready?”

“Yes, sir.”

Danny pointed at me. “Hear that? She called me ‘sir.
